Man Utd news: Insider makes paranoia claim in wake of back-to-back Premier League defeats

United came into the new Premier League campaign off the back of a turbulent summer, during which top targets weren’t signed and rifts developed between Mourinho and Ed Woodward, as well as key players.

They kicked off the season with a 2-1 win over Leicester but were far from convincing and more clouds have gathered over the club since.

Manchester United went down 3-2 at Brighton last weekend before losing 3-0 at the hands of title rivals Tottenham on Monday night.

Fears are brewing among United fans that a stormy season is on the horizon as Mourinho labours to get his side going.

Former United ace Ritchie, who works as a matchday legend at Old Trafford and pundit on United’s in-house MUTV station, claims fans should not let “paranoia” set in though.

“The people in front of us were a bit disgruntled after the [Tottenham] game and I said to them: ‘I know you’re disappointed, we all are and the players will be,” Ritchie told Love Sport Radio‘s Comedy Breakfast Show with Ian Stone.

“‘But we need to get behind them. That was a much better performance than 3-0 suggests – they didn’t get battered.’

“The manager knows he has to work on the defence – and he will do it. There’s a bit of frustration from the fans because we were so good last year but still nowhere near the noisy neighbours unfortunately.

“We thought we’d step up this season – and there’s still a chance to do that.

“It’s only two defeats and United don’t go on long losing streaks so let’s not get too paranoid about it.”

Phil Jones and Chris Smalling failed to do their jobs for Tottenham’s first and third goals, while Victor Lindelof almost set Dele Alli up for a goal.

Ritchie says United are not necessarily making more defensive mistakes but that the same errors from last season are being punished more often.

“It was a fantastic reaction by the fans,” Ritchie said.

“I’ve got to agree with what the manager said after the game as well.

“I’ve analysed it again and watched highlights again this morning.

“Apart from the defensive lapses for the goals, especially in the first half, they were the better side.

“Should have scored – [Romelu] Lukaku should have scored maybe a couple.

“Then second half they had chances as well.

“So did Spurs – and they should have had a penalty in the first half as well.

“It’s defensively where they’re making mistakes and getting punished.

“Whereas last season they were making the mistakes but not getting punished as much.

“Last season they had the second best defensive record and that’s changed.

“Nine times out of 10 Harry Kane wouldn’t have scored that header – it was fantastic.

“To concede another one straight afterwards makes it hard to come back from 2-0 down, even at home, against anyone in the Premier League.

“I thought the players went for it [at 1-0] and that’s how they got caught for the second goal.

“They didn’t test [Hugo] Lloris enough but did create chances.

“The manager knows he has to iron these mistakes out of the game.”

United will be looking to get back to winning ways on Sunday when they travel to Turf Moor to take on Burnley.

Ritchie has warned United face a tough task against Sean Dyche’s men, who are as yet winless in the Premier League.

“They’ve got a really hard game next Sunday against Burnley,” Ritchie added.

“You go there and there’s a partisan crowd and a small pitch.

“They’re on your heels all the time.

“They’re on a losing streak too and their fans will get behind them and want a reaction – especially against United.

“And we’ve had a couple of slip-ups there in the last few years.

“When you lose a couple of games in a row, the players need to get together in the dressing and say we’ve got to double our output out on that pitch.

“Compared to the game at Brighton, the performance [vs Tottenham] was three or four times better.”
