Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has called for the club to show solidarity after slumping to two defeats in their opening three Premier League games.

A shock 3-2 loss to Brighton was followed by a heavy 3-0 reverse to Tottenham at Old Trafford, and has put manager Jose Mourinho under intense scrutiny.

Yet Giggs, who attended the Tottenham defeat, is confident the club can pull through their poor start.

‘I was there on Monday as a United fan,’ Giggs said.

‘It’s time for the fans to stick together, get behind the club, team and manager.

‘It’s a tough time but we’ve had tough times before and got through it.’

Giggs, who spent a year as assistant manager to Louis van Gaal in the Old Trafford dugout, had previously suggested Mourinho did not fit the mould of a United manager.

He said: ‘They went for a winner, in Jose, a win-at-all-costs type of manager. Is Jose a typical Manchester United manager? Probably not, but United were in a situation of “how quickly can we get back to the top?”‘
